This article is for all my new models out there, in this article we will be talking about the essentials & what is needed to create an amazing portfolio. When you begin in chasing you're dream you would never have thought that this industry would be as hectic & cut throat as it is. Especially for a young aspiring model without representation, you'll find that people in this industry will try to tear you down & will be full of judgement. This dream is certainly not for the weak of heart, you must have a backbone. This life requires you to be book smart, street smart, strong, confident, a hard worker & overall a business women. Also with a touch of common sense, but will get to that part at a later article, we are getting off topic. Because after all being a model is just another product on the market. This is a difficult industry, its not all smiles & glitter...
Why is your portfolio so important, you ask? Because it is you're first impression it is what will help you sell yourself, look at it like your own personal catalogue & you are the only merchandise for sale. As they say " Your portfolio speaks great attributes about you're quality of work & what you bring to the table." It is what will land you work, it is like a pre-interview, so the better you're portfolio the better. So as you see it is very important, so I will teach you what you need to sell yourself...
Top Ten Rules To An Amazing Portfolio
1. Keep your portfolio current, this is so important models who choose to keep it current land more jobs. Because think about it how many times have you bought something online only to find out it wasn't the product you expected. Same as a car or other product nobody wants to hire a model who in her portfolio was a blond but now is a brunette. Its basic common sense & politeness nobody likes feeling like they were tricked. The general rule is to only keep things in your portfolio no older than 6 months...keep your portfolio current & it will keep you working.
2. Quantity does not mean quality, a basic rule for you're portfolio is less means more. Nobody wants to look through a shrine of you, they just want to see your potential. Give them enough to see you in different light, but stray away from you're port becoming a shrine to you. It should be anywhere from 12 to 24 shoots, sometimes up to 40 shoots.
3. Versatility, should be what you give. Do not stay categorized as :the girl next door" or "the sexy chica" you should be able to achieve it all, there should be no limit to your talents.
4. The Wow factor should be what you give, every picture in your portfolio should give the viewer this feeling of total awe. Like you are worth every penny they invest in you. You're content should be first rate work, it should look like you belong in a magazine already.
5. The presentation of your portfolio should be in excellent condition, that means ladies/gentlemen your portfolio should be clean inside & out. The book should be clean & the pages should be in good shape, worthy of A+ material. Nobody wants to look through a portfolio that looks like you've eaten on it & dragged it through the mud. Come on, guys that's just disgusting...
6. Don't like taking pictures this isn't the industry for you, lol. Take lots of pictures so that you may have many many options to choose from.
7. You need variety, It should include head shoots, full body shoot as well as mid drift shoots. You should have pictures to show you from all different angles, as well as in different demeanor.
8. Have your shoots printed in 8x10 or 8.5x11 it doesn't really matter the size you choose but all shoots must be the same size. When picking out a portfolio stick to black bright colors or wild patterns can be seen as unprofessional. Being professional is very important, because after all regardless of the fun this is still a business.
9. Put your name & contact information in your portfolio so that modeling agencies and modeling clients know how to contact you. You can put your name and contact information on the cover of your portfolio or on the first page of your portfolio. It is really totally up to you.
10. Overall, have fun be energetic & enjoy what you do... because everyone that works with you can tell if this is you're passion, & where you want to be.
I hope this has helped some of you & good luck my little aspiring models. Remember be about you're business, be professional && mostly be passionate about your dreams... xoxo
